Underground and Mainstream Hip Hop on Radio Hungary

Radio Hungary has embraced different kinds of popular music ever since the fall of Communism in 1989. One of the major and interesting music genres that has gained some ground on some of Hungary's radio stations is hip hop. Hip hop mainly originated from the United States, but with Hungary's increased westernization and openness, hip hop has travelled across to Hungary and there are now a number of Hungarian hip hop artists.

When it comes to Hungarian hip hop, however, there are two competing developments. On the one hand, there has been the underground hip hop scene, which typically criticized mainstream hip hop for selling out. On the other hand, mainstream hip hop is distributed at a wider scale and is more commercialized with artists like Ganxsta Zolee.
